‘Semi-improv’ is a technique for those who want the look and feel of improv, but who aren’t quite ready to give up their rulers.
In this lecture, I’ll tell you the story of my first quilt: one that I made by accident. Where I was determined to replicate the look of wonky improv-style cross blocks, but not willing to give up the precision and efficiency of more traditional piecing techniques like strip piecing, nested seams and squaring up blocks by trimming.
We’ll also discuss the utility of creating modular subunits: cutting the same subunits from each of several fabric colors, then mixing-and-matching them in different orientations and color value combinations to create a variety of blocks that seem to dance and sparkle.
I will share the highlights from the Crooked Crosses and Bent Boxes quilt pattern in hopes that you might give the pattern a try, or to encourage you to employ semi-improv techniques in your own quilt designs.
