Seaside Miniature Quilt Workshop 🌊🏖️
Join us for a creative day making a beautiful Seaside Miniature Quilt!
Come along and create a charming miniature textile seascape featuring sandy beaches, rolling waves, colourful beach huts and bunting. This enjoyable workshop is suitable for quilters who enjoy appliqué, quilting and adding texture with fabrics and embellishments (suitable for beginners to this technique).
Date: Saturday 6th September
Time: 10am - 1pm
Venue: Online via Zoom
Cost: £15 per person
Requirements List
Please bring the following:
Basic Equipment
-
Basic sewing kit (needles, pins, scissors)
-
Tweezers (useful for placing small pieces)
-
Small cutting mat
-
Quilting ruler
-
Rotary cutter (helpful but not essential)
Fabrics
Choose fabrics inspired by the seaside. As this is a miniature quilt, only small pieces are needed (approximately 9" wide × 2–4" deep).
You will need:
-
Sand fabrics – beige, cream, brown or yellow
-
Pale blue for the sky
-
Coordinating shades of blue for the sea
-
Small-scale striped or spotted fabrics for the beach huts
-
Matching plain fabrics for beach hut roofs
-
Small-scale striped fabric for the bunting
-
Fabric for backing and binding (navy or royal blue works particularly well)
Also bring:
-
A small piece of fusible web (such as Bondaweb or Heat & Bond)
Wadding
A small piece of thin wadding, slightly larger than your finished design.
Julia recommends Hobbs Thermore Ultra Thin Wadding, available online or as small pieces from her Etsy shop. Cotton or wool wadding scraps are also suitable. Please avoid 2oz polyester wadding, as it is too bulky for miniature quilts.
Embellishments
Bring any interesting fabrics or trims to add texture, such as:
-
Lace
-
Scrim
-
Sparkly fabrics
-
Thicker embroidery threads
-
Seaside-themed buttons or embellishments
-
Fabrics with small seaside motifs that can be cut out
Shadow Appliqué Fabric
You will also need a small piece of sheer, transparent fabric in a light colour (cream, white or pale blue), such as:
-
Chiffon
-
Fine tulle
-
Wedding net
Julia also supplies lightweight polyester tulle through her Etsy shop. Please avoid standard dressmaking net, which is too heavy for this technique.
Other Essentials
-
Sewline Fabric Glue Pen (or similar fabric glue pen)
-
Please note: wet glue pens are not suitable.
-
-
Threads for quilting in:
-
Blues
-
Sand
-
Grey
-
